Phil Burton @ Lizotte’s, Mulubinba/Newcastle – 10 February 2023

After decades touring with Human Nature, Phil Burton has gone solo. It must be a daunting prospect, stepping out from one of Australia’s most beloved acts, especially one that relies so heavily on harmonies. He admitted to the crowd at Lizotte’s, his very first solo show, that he was terrified. But he kept those nerves in check and proved that he doesn’t need the safety net of Human Nature to wow music lovers.

Phil’s Songs That Shaped My Soul tour concept is a simple one, but a real crowd-pleaser. It makes sense, given Human Nature’s recent success playing Motown covers, that he’d stick to popular songs rather than originals. However, this show gives Phil the freedom to branch out from that box and present a much wider range of music that made him the man he is today. He told us about discovering his father’s record collection and flashed us a few of its gems. Albums like “Dark Side of the Moon,” “Hotel California,” and “Silk Degrees” – my dad had them all too. Having a similar musical upbringing, I loved hearing his covers of tracks like “Lido Shuffle” and “New York State of Mind”. His version of John Farnham’s “Comic Conversations”, the song he used to perform to show off, left no doubt that he’s a vocal talent to be reckoned with. These are songs that would never make a Human Nature set, and he clearly relished performing them for us.

Of course, Phil couldn’t totally ignore his part in Australia’s biggest boyband. After realising a song like Tellin’ Everybody, where he simply provided harmonies, wouldn’t work, he took the lead on “Wishes” and “Every Time You Cry.” He also brought us plenty of soul, including those Motown songs that packed out the houses in Vegas.

Since this was Phil’s show, he could cherry-pick the songs that meant the most to him, and the gig was stronger for it. I was a massive Human Nature fan in my teens, but they kind of lost me with the Motown era as I felt it was a little by the numbers. While it sounded good, it lacked a little heart for me. Here though Phil was in his element.

I saw this show with my parents. It occurred to me that Dad hadn’t seen Human Nature since he happened upon them by chance supporting Celine Dion at the very start of their careers. He’d never felt compelled to see a show, even though there was a time his daughter didn’t miss one. He initially wasn’t going to come to this date, but after seeing Phil being interviewed on one of the morning TV shows, he realised he would play plenty of the songs he loved and asked if we could add a seat at our table.

My mother has gone to a handful of Human Nature gigs with me over the years. Yet I’ve never heard her rave about one of them as she did the other night. I lost count of the number of times she leaned over to excitedly say “He’s so good!” She was one of the many people up dancing by the end of the night.

As for me, the passionate Human Nature fan back in the day, I felt an immense sense of pride. I loved the nostalgia of this show, hearing a few Human Nature classics but also the songs I grew up listening to. Phil’s voice was flawless, proving that while he sounds great harmonising he can more than hold his own fronting his own gig. As word spreads about his solo shows, I have no doubt that he can keep on packing out venues as he did with Human Nature. For now he’s clearly testing the waters with New South Wales dates, but hopefully he’ll get the confidence from this run and announce shows in the other states. Until then, you can catch him at these remaining dates:

16 February 2023 – Camelot Lounge, Bulanaming/Marrickville
25 February 2023 – Brass Monkey, Kurranulla/Cronulla

James Reyne Celebrates 30 Solo Years with Capital City Shows

In 2017, James Reyne celebrates a 30-year solo career. To mark the milestone, he’ll re-release his solo album on vinyl and play two very special live shows.

That self-titled album built upon his artistry developed with Australian Crawl. Even if you don’t own it, you’ll know the songs, tracks like “Fall of Rome,” “Motor’s Too Fast,” “Rip It Up,” and one of my favourites, “Hammerhead,” performed so beautifully here.

James will play with a full band at Memo Music Hall in St Kilda on April 28 and The Basement in Sydney on May 5. Tickets are on sale from the venues now.

Alex Lahey Goes Solo with “Air Mail”

It was only a couple of months ago that I was gushing about Melbourne act Animaux and their awesome single “Come on Over.” I’m about to do it all again after discovering the first track from lead singer Alex Lahey’s new solo project “Air Mail.”

This song is just wonderful, with an infectious energy and charming lyrics. Oscar Dawson from Holy Holy produced the track and also offered his expertise on guitars, keys, and percussion.

“Come On Over” is really good stuff, the sort of music that makes me want to press play again when it’s done. Whether she’s with her Animaux mates or tracking solo, I’m so excited about this young Melbourne artist. We’ll see her debut solo EP released early next year.

Ben Ottewell Celebrates Local Release of Rattlebag with Acoustic Shows

Incomparable Gomez frontman Ben Ottewell will bring his solo show to Australia next month. He’ll showcase the songs from his forthcoming release Rattlebag, some old favourites, and even some surprising covers in these intimate, acoustic shows.

Rattlebag again sees Ben collaborating with his childhood buddy Sam Genders.

“Sam and I grew up together in a little village called Bonsall in Derbyshire and have been friends since childhood. I love his songwriting — the stuff he did with his bands Tunng and The Accidental, particularly lyrically.”

Ben Ottewell’s tour kicks off in Fremantle on October 24, the same day that Rattlebag gets a local release. It might seem a bit of a gamble getting tickets for concerts showcasing a brand new album, but this sublime stripped back performance of “Rattlebag” should put your mind at ease.

Davey Lane Channels the 60s with First Solo Single

You Am I’s Davey Lane wears his classic rock influences on his sleeve with his debut solo single “You’re The Cops. I’m the Crime.”

The song’s distinctive guitar driven rhythm and psychedelic undertones could have come straight from the 1960s. Its retro feel makes it instantly accessible. I wonder whether we’ll find more vintage pop-rock gems on Davey’s forthcoming debut solo endeavour The Good Borne of Bad Tymes.

There’s no release date for the album yet, but if this song’s any indication it’ll be worth listening out for.

Angus Stone Tours the World

Angus Stone will warm up for his Australian solo tour with shows in North America and Europe. Angus will kick off his Broken Brights World Tour in Los Angeles on Tuesday and tour through until local shows in January.

Angus is particularly excited to take his brand of “prairie dog blues” to the United States, where he’ll play some of the country’s most iconic nightspots.

“We’re playing really cool venues and it’s become much like it has here [in Australia] in the way we can play solid shows,” he explained. “Going to places like Salt Lake City and making our way up to Canada, in through all the rural parts of the States, it’s amazing how your music can trickle into all those different rivers of another continent.”

Europeans shouldn’t feel too short-changed either. While Angus won’t be in the region too long, he promises to return in 2013. Until then, Angus Stone fans around the world can look forward to the following shows.

Harry James Angus Goes Solo

The Cat Empire’s Harry James Angus is taking advantage of his band’s hiatus and releasing a solo album.

Little Stories will be released digitally on September 16 and in stores on October 10. It’s been a bit of a labour of love, with Harry spending the last three years penning the tracks.

“These little stories have provided me with hours of entertainment, just me in the lounge
room. Sometimes my long-suffering wife will patiently listen as I stumble through an idea, but usually it’s just me – laughing at my own jokes, lip trembling at my own tragedies, watching the characters come alive – and the whole story just unfurls, eventually, like a patchwork sail,” Harry said.

Harry James Angus will celebrate Little Stories’ release with a tour of the major capitals later this month.

8 September 2011 – The Toff in Town, Melbourne
17 September 2011 – The Vanguard, Sydney
25 September 2011 – Northcote Social Club, Melbourne

Dave Larkin Readies Solo Release

I wonder whether The Kinks’ legendary singer Ray Davies has given his Aussie support act Dave Larkin any tips about going solo. We’re used to seeing Dave fronting Dallas Crane, but these days it seems he’s quite happy going it alone.

Dave’s currently working on his first solo release, which promises to be an alt-country affair.

There’s no word yet on when we’ll get to hear it, but Undercover says Dave is road testing new material in his Ray Davies’ support slot. Sounds to me like that full-length disc won’t be too far away.
