Something for Kate Back to Their Best With “Situation Room”

There’s a place for nostalgia, but it’s far more impressive when bands can continue producing good music through the decades. Something for Kate might have enjoyed their hey-day in the ‘90s, but I think their latest track “Situation Room” may be their best release yet.

I love the rough, raw quality of this release, like something that’s come out of a spontaneous recording session. Inspired by a Stephanie Ashworth bassline, it got Paul Dempsey writing some of his best lyrics.

“You hear the first line and you know what’s coming next,” he explained, “and that the person is illustrating all these ways how they have total control and can predict any outcome, but there’s one person they can’t get certainty over and grasp.”

“Situation Room” gives us a delicious taste of the quality music we can expect from Something For Kate’s new studio album, due later this year.

Scene & Heard Bring 90s and 00s Greats to Newcastle This November

We’re so connected to our phones and the internet these days that it’s a strange thing to go off the grid as I do on a cruise ship. We get a little news of the outside world in a one-page paper, but essentially we’re in a bubble. One thing we miss is the concert announcements. Good for my budget, bad for my blog. So just in case you missed it too, I wanted to put Scene & Heard on your radar.

This is a brand new music festival making me all nostalgic. For starters, it’s got a dream line-up of local late nineties and early naughties favourites including The Living End, Spiderbait, Killing Heidi, Something for Kate, and Sneaky Sound System. Then there’s the venue, Wickham Park, an old stomping ground for this blogger. I might live on the Central Coast now, but as anyone who grew up in Newie knows, once you’re a Novocastrian you’re always a Novocastrian.

A classic car display and vintage vinyl fair will ramp up the nostalgia on the day. Enjoy these and the music while you’re knocking back craft beers, bespoke cocktails, and delicious food truck fare.

Scene & Heard hits Newcastle’s Wickham Park on November 4. Tickets are on sale now. Get yours soon, because with a line-up this good it’s bound to sell out.

Slowly Slowly’s New Single is Out of This World

Melbourne rockers Slowly Slowly continue their winning ways with their epic new single “Aliens.”

I absolutely love this track. It starts small but builds to the kind of crescendo that encourages you to punch your fist in the air and sing along.

Slowly Slowly frontman Ben Stewart says “”the song is a stream of consciousness, equal parts self-loathing and self-pity. I wrote it in my car on my phone in about four minutes. I guess that’s why it kind of sucks.”

It doesn’t.

“Aliens” comes from Slowly Slowly’s forthcoming second album. If you love the song, you can score a 7” with two versions of “Aliens” and the live track “Dinosaurs” from Slowly Slowly’s Bandcamp page. They’ll launch the single in front of hometown fans at Howler in October before joining Something for Kate on their national tour.

Something for Kate Announce Big Plans for 20th Anniversary

Hearing that Something for Kate are celebrating 20 years in the business makes me feel pretty old. Thankfully the band aren’t showing any signs of such fatigue. They’ll mark the milestone in style with the release of their entire back catalogue on vinyl, deluxe CD, and iTunes, as well as the release of a short film charting their career, a book Paper Trail doing the same, and a big national tour this July and August.

These shows are going to be something pretty special as the band plays two sets every night. The gigs will be jam-packed with delights for fans including B-sides, rarities, and of course those killer hits. The short film will play before each show, and the book will be available from the merch stands. If you can’t make it to the shows you’ll be able to buy it online.

Expect the merch stand to get pretty crowded as the band promises to stop by every night to meet fans and sign the stuff they’ve been collecting for the last two decades.
The re-issued music goes on sale on July 4, the same day the band kicks off their retrospective 20 Year Anniversary tour.

Something for Kate Release Double Greatest Hits

Something for Kate have had so many hits over their 10-year career, they needed two CDs for their new ‘best of’ album.

The Murmur Years, to be released on August 18, features a whopping 32 massive hits and a new track called “The Futurist.”

To celebrate the release, the indie trio will hit the road in September for a national tour. Kicking off in Melbourne, the tour will visit most Australian states. Tickets are on sale from July 5 at the usual outlets. See Something for Kate’s website for the complete list of tour dates.

If you can’t wait for the new album, Something for Kate have recorded some of their favorite tunes for an iTunes “Originals” session. This very special performance is available for download now.

Big Names Play Small Towns

Here’s one for the kids in the bush. Indie radio network Triple J will rock the Outback with a series of free outdoor concerts.

Chart toppers Missy Higgins and Something for Kate will perform alongside blues band Blue King Brown at the tour’s first show in Humpty Doo. Around 5,000 people call the Northern Territory community home.

Powderfinger, The Cat Empire and Grinspoon will then star in concerts in Karratha, Burnie and Innisfail.

Local artists will play alongside the headliners at these very special events.

The Triple J Goes AWOL concert series aims to bring some of Australia’s hottest artists to some of its most remote regions.

“We are bringing live music to places that don’t get a whole lot of live music,” said a Triple J spokesperson.

The Triple J Goes AWOL series kicks off on July 21. See the Triple J website for more details.
