San Cisco, Stonefield, and More Play Port Macquarie’s New Memory Lane Festival

Port Macquarie is a lovely place but the residents are a bit starved for live music. The occasional big name act plays The Glasshouse or the local pubs, but most often the people of Port have to make the long drive to Newcastle to see their favourite bands. So I was thrilled to see that Port’s getting a brand new festival, called Memory Lane, this October.

The line-up’s awesome, with San Cisco, Patrick James, Stonefield, and Zefereli playing alongside local heroes Bear in a Man Suit, Plebeian Groove, and Withernecks. There’s also going to be plenty of awesome food on sale and heaps more.

The event welcomes music lovers of all ages, and it’s entirely drug and alcohol free so parents can breathe easy. Something tells me we’re going to see plenty of young things blowing off steam before their end-of-year exams.

Memory Lane hits the laneway behind Port Central on October 18 between noon and 7 pm. Tickets go on sale tomorrow from Oztix.

Stonefield Release Dreamy New Single

Stonefield have always been influenced by the music of the 60s, but their latest single “Golden Dream” is much more psychedelic than their previous efforts. There’s still the rock edge that first endeared the Findlay sisters to us, but its trippiness is brand new.

“The song has a real sense of female strength. It thrives on the energy of a man longing for her to come back to him,” explained Amy Findlay. “It’s a woman’s perspective of the classic masculine band-on-the-road story – reassuring their partner back home that they’ll come back to them. I love that the strength of the female presence is contrasted by the more delicate vocal.”

Stonefield are hitting the road this month to support the release of “Golden Dream” and give fans a taste of the new material they’ll hear on album number two, due out later this year.

Stonefield Tour New Single Head of Album Release

When the fresh-faced sisters Stonefield burst onto the music scene I thought they possessed maturity beyond their tender years.

However, after a year out of the spotlight they’ve grown even more to create their long awaited self-titled debut album. That won’t hit stores until October 11, but we get a taste of it with the debut single “Put Your Curse on Me”.

The track’s got all the guts we remember from the girls, but more layers than their earlier efforts. It can’t all be down to the appearance of the Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir, but their harmonious voices certainly give this number a lift.

Fans can hear this track and more from Stonefield’s debut album when the sisters kick off their national tour in Newcastle tonight. Tickets are still available, so make sure you get yourself to one of these shows.

23 August 2013 – Small Ballroom, Newcastle
24 August 2013 – Oxford Art Factory, Sydney

Stonefield & Owl Eyes Team Up for The Line

It’ll be a serious case of girl power when sisters Stonefield join forces with fellow Victorian Owl Eyes for one big national tour next month. Casually dubbed Winter Road Trip 2012, the tour hopes to raise awareness of the national government’s The Line initiative.

The Line is all about promoting respective relationships amongst young Australians. It touches on a range of issues including physical violence, cyber bullying, abusive texting, and sexting. Both Owl Eyes and Stonefield’s Findlay sisters are program ambassadors, and they’re keen to take its message to regional locations.

“I feel like out in the regional places they don’t  always get a lot of live  music or get an opportunity to get out to a lot of venues or anything like that so it will be nice to take our music and The Line’s  message there and spread it around a bit.  It will be quite special.” Owl Eyes said in a statement.

“Playing in a country town makes a big impact,” Amy Findlay added. “It seems like everyone knows what  it is going on and they are so appreciative  of it. So I feel like the message will make a big impact.”

Catch Stonefield and Owl Eyes on their Winter Road Trip at the following pit stops:

1 August 2012 – Karova Lounge, Ballarat

Q & A with Stonefield’s Holly Findlay

Stonefield bowled me over in 2010 when they released their debut single “Into the Clover.” They were wee young things, but I saw such promise in their gutsy classic brand of rock. Since that time they’ve gone from strength to strength, playing Glastonbury and supporting some of the biggest acts in the country. I caught up with the band’s bassist Holly Findlay to talk about their brand new single, time in the studio, and what comes next.

You’re all so young, but your music has such a classic sound. What did you listen to when you were growing up?
We grew up listening to our Mum and Dad’s music. Everything from Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd and The Doors to Cat Stevens and Fleetwood Mac.

I’m one of three girls, and I can’t imagine working with my sisters. How does it work for you guys being in a band together?
Being in a band with your sisters has its advantages and disadvantages. For us it’s more of an advantage because we get along really well most of the time. We do have our little tiffs but we get over it pretty easy.  We really connect with each other and help out each other with ideas.

You grew up in a country town in Victoria called Darraweit Guim, which is so small many people probably haven’t heard of it. What was that like?
It was fun growing up in a small town but it definitely got boring sometimes and that’s when we turned to playing music!

You’ve had some amazing opportunities like playing Glastonbury. What was it like to play such an iconic festival so far from home?
The experience of going over to the UK and playing Glastonbury was so surreal. It was such a great experience. It was our first overseas show let alone the biggest show we have ever played.

And you also toured the country with Cold Chisel. What did you learn from travelling with such seasoned musicians?
It was an outdoor concert that had a festival vibe. All the shows were in regional areas at wineries, which was certainly different but it was great fun and it was a real privilege to play with such an iconic Australian band.

You’re just about to release your new single “Bad Reality.” Why did you choose to unleash that song?
It’s a straight out rock song and gets straight to the point. That’s what we like about it.

The single comes from your new EP, which will hit stores in a couple of weeks. What can you tell us about it?
We recorded the EP with Lindsay Gravina who has recorded with a lot of amazing Australian artists. We are really happy with the results and can’t wait for everyone to hear it!

After spending so much time on the road in the last year. What’s it been like to hibernate away in the studio?
We didn’t really hibernate in the studio; we sort of recorded in blocks because we had gigs in-between. We intend to do that with the album as well so Sarah and I don’t miss out on a lot of school and it takes off the pressure of being in the studio for such a long period of time in one big block.

Two years have passed between the release of your debut EP and this one. How have you grown as a band during that time?
We think our song writing has improved and has matured. We have experienced a lot more in the music industry in the past couple of years and it has really pushed us to improve.

Do you have anything else in the pipeline?
We’re currently writing and demoing for the album. We’re playing at Triple J’s One Night Stand as well so we’re really excited about that!

20 April 2012 – The Zoo, Brisbane

Stonefield Tour “Bad Reality”

Rock prodigies Stonefield are set to rock Oz with their Bad Reality tour.

The string of dates will support the single of the same name, a foot-stomping rock track which comes some nine months after the release of their breakthrough song “Blackwater Rising.” I can hardly blame the sisters for taking so long to launch it though. Over the last twelve months they’ve played some of the biggest music festivals in Australia and the United Kingdom and supported acts like The Foo Fighters, Kaiser Chiefs, and our own Cold Chisel. Those girls have definitely been busy!

Tickets go on sale tomorrow for the following shows.

19 April 2012 – The Great Northern Hotel, Byron Bay
20 April 2012 – The Zoo, Brisbane
21 April 2012 – Kings Beach Tavern, Caloundra

Stonefield Finally Tour Australia

A good eight months have gone by since Stonefield turned my head with their rocking debut single “Through the Clover.” I waited for these young Aussie sisters to blow up, and waited, and waited. Patience is a virtue, as they say though, and it seems all that waiting is finally about to pay off.

After spending rocking Glastonbury, the girls are back with a brand new single “Black Water Rising” and a national tour in the works. It’s also been announced that after these shows wrap up they’ll warm up the stage for the legendary Cold Chisel.

It’s taken some time, but Stonefield are bound to hit those dizzy heights I predicted. If you want to see them before everyone else catches on make sure you head to one of the following shows.

Stonefield Sisters Rock

While watching Video Hits on Sunday the clip for this song, “Through the Clover” by Stonefield, caught my eye. After doing a bit of digging, I was thrilled to find that this rocking sister act is one of our own.

In a world of vacuous female pop acts with auto-tuned vocals, it’s so refreshing to see girls that make real music. This song is ballsy stuff, with some rocking guitar riffs and great raspy vocals.

This tune comes from the Melbourne band’s EP of the same name. To sound this polished and powerful before even recording an album is incredible. I’m predicting really big things from these girls.
