Talk Heavy Release “Fun Dumb Song”, “The Montreal Screwjob”

Hit the volume, because Meeanjin/Brisbane punksters Talk Heavy have just released a fabulous new single, “The Montreal Screwjob,” and it’s best played loud. And often. After the emo vibes of their last two tracks, “The Montreal Screwjob” is a bit of a change of pace. Rather than going deep and dark, the lads retell the story of ‘90s wrestling icon Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart.

“We’d been sitting on this instrumental song for a time trying to find the right lyrics. When I was talking to our guitarist Pat about it, he suggested to just try writing about something silly or non-personal instead of our usual personal existentialism,” explained Matt Cochran, the band’s vocalist and guitarist. “We’re both 90’s wrestling nerds so we ended up settling on The Montreal Screwjob. I’ve always wanted to write about wrestling because it’s something I obsessed over as a kid and I was inspired by the way that The Mountain Goats channeled that in their own way for their 2015 album ‘Beat The Champ’. We’re super proud of how it turned out, it’s just a fun dumb song and I can’t wait to play it live.”

Talk Heavy are celebrating the release with the announcement of a brand new East Coast tour. Catch them anywhere you can this February.

Talk Heavy Get Real With “The Song That Plays (When Marissa Shoots Trey)”

After making a splash on the scene in 2022 with the release of their debut EP Jump Into Nothing and gigs supporting The Smith Streets Band, Sly Withers, and Press Club, Meeanjin/Brisbane band Talk Heavy are back with their first release for the year. “The Song That Plays (When Marissa Shoots Trey)” is worth the wait, with its high-energy chords and nostalgic pop-punk feel. And a seemingly random reference to The O.C. is always welcome too!

“To put it simply, ‘The Song That Plays (When Marissa Shoots Trey)’ is about recognising the bad space you’re in, what trauma or response pushed you into that position and making the statement of ‘fuck it, I’m done with this and need to move forward,’” explained Talk Heavy’s lead singer Matt Cochran. “For me personally, I’ve always struggled with weight and comfort eating. I was so physically exhausted touring with Press Club that I couldn’t ignore it anymore, which pushed me to that point where I realised ‘if I don’t change something soon, I’m going to die in the next 5 to 10 years.’”

If you’re in Meeanjin/Brisbane, make sure you catch Talk Heavy at The Brightside on August 15 as part of the epic SIDEFEST lineup.

Talk Heavy Drop Single Ahead of First EP Release

If their latest single “Mixing Pictures” is any indication, the debut EP from Meeanjin/Brisbane punk-rock outfit Talk Heavy is going to be big. This single gives us big chunky guitar riffs, big drums, and a big singalong chorus. It was the last song recorded for the EP, and it’s quickly become a personal favourite for each member of the band.

“Lyrically, it’s about how you can’t force things to work,” explained Talk Heavy’s frontman Matt Cochran. “There’s unfortunately always going to be some things beyond your control in life that you just need to accept and learn from. We’re so proud of how it turned out.”

Talk Heavy’s debut EP Jump Into Nothing drops this week on September 29. Hometown fans can catch them at the Scorched Festival on October 29.
