Tex Perkins and The Fat Rubber Band Drop New Double A-Side Single

Is there anyone cooler in the Australian music industry than Tex Perkins? If there was any doubt, the release of his latest double A-side single with The Fat Rubber Band should put an end to the argument.

First up we’ve got a cover of Allen Toussaint’s “Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky (From Now On)” which is every bit as funky as it sounds. The next track, a rendition of Bobby Charles’ “I Must Be In a Good Place Now” is a total 180, showing Tex and his band’s softer side.

The new music is a sign of things to come, with the band confirming these are two tracks that helped shape the direction of their forthcoming album. Hear a little more when Tex Perkins and The Fat Rubber Band launch the single at Hotel Westwood in Melbourne on May 23.

Nick Cave & Tex Perkins Play on Jeffrey Lee Pierce Tribute Album

Australian and international musicmakers have joined forces for a second tribute album honouring the music of Jeffrey Lee Pierce and his Gun Club.

Local acts Nick Cave, Mick Harvey, Tex Perkins, and Hugo Race cover Pierce’s tunes on The Journey is Long. Leading international acts Debbie Harry, Lydia Lunch, and Mark Lanegan have also leant their talents to the project.

The Gun Club’s music blended punk and American roots in a way that no one had ever heard before. Their albums influenced many modern day artists including Jack White, Jon Spencer, Hoodoo Gurus, and the acts that appear on the disc. After living hard with drugs and drink, the world lost Jeffrey Lee to a brain haemorrhage in 1996.

The Journey is Long will his stores on April 6. It follows 2009’s We Are Only Riders. A third and final volume, entitled The Task Has Overwhelmed Us, should be released later this year.

Get “The Man in Black” on DVD

If you missed Tex Perkins’ turn as Johnny Cash, or just want to relive the magic all over again, you’re in luck. Sony Music will release The Man in Black on DVD and Blu-Ray next month.

The DVD was filmed at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre last month and features two hours of iconic Cash tunes including “Ring of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” and “A Boy Named Sue.” There are also bonus tracks, interviews with Tex, his band and producers, and behind-the-scenes footage from rehearsals and Tex’s visit to Port Phillip Prison. It’s not quite Folsom, but the inmates loved his appearance nonetheless.

Look for The Man in Black in stores on November 5.

Tex Perkins Does Johnny Cash

There’s always been a touch of Johnny Cash about our own Tex Perkins. So it’s fitting that Tex will recreate The Man in Black’s famous concerts at Folsom Prison with two shows at Laverton’s Port Phillip Prison on August 31.

Tex is no stranger to Cash’s music, having sung many of his big hits in the early 80s with the Dum Dums.

”I’m an old hand at Johnny Cash. I feel like it’s my territory. In fact, ever since I have been trying not to sing like Johnny Cash,” he told the Sydney Morning Herald. ”My inner Johnny has been sitting back patiently all these years. Now I can just relax and let him out.”

It won’t have quite the same feel, but music fans on the outside can see Tex’s Johnny Cash show from September 1 to 12 at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre, and from October 14 at the Twelfth Night Theatre in Brisbane.
