“Lustre” – The Buoys

For the last few days, I’ve been cranking Lustre, the debut album from Aussie rockers The Buoys. There’s not enough women making rock music in the world these days. There are even fewer examples of really good all-female rock acts. But these women are making some of the best I’ve ever heard.

I’ve been rocking out to The Buoys for some time, lapping up singles like “Check Mate”, “Guard My Heart”, and so many more. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve come across a track from The Buoys that hasn’t inspired me to put my fingers to the keyboard and share it with you all. After listening to Lustre, I’m convinced they just don’t have a bad song in them. Sustaining the quality over 14 tracks is no mean feat, but it proves just how good these women are.

I could call out individual tracks, but that would feel unfair to the rest. In actuality, this album grabbed me with the first honest, impactful lyrics of “Settle Petal” and didn’t let go. I was in raptures right until the final singalong notes of “Totally Completely Fine.” And then I hit play again. And again. And again. In fact, I’ve had to convince myself to stop procrastinating and write about this album so you could all get onto listening to it. So do it. Honestly. Don’t waste another moment before getting it on.

Lustre is out now. The Buoys will celebrate its release with shows in the major capitals in August and September. Tickets are on sale now for all of the following dates:

The Buoys Tease Debut Album With “Check Mate” Single

When I heard The Buoys had co-written a song with Alex Lahey, I knew it was going to be good. The band’s latest single “Check Mate” doesn’t disappoint. Take a listen to this awesome track which shows The Buoys in top form.

Tas Wilson directed the music video, which captures the energy of a road trip with friends, mirroring the longing for connection that you hear through the song.

“Check Mate” gives us our first taste of The Buoys debut album Lustre, which will be released on July 12. You can pre-order a vinyl copy online. It was all recorded live, so I imagine it’s going to deliver everything we love about The Buoys. Before it drops, you can see The Buoys supporting Luke Hemmings at the following shows

The Buoys Release Fantastic New Single, “Guard My Heart”

Eora/Sydney-based indie-rockers The Buoys have just dropped their emotional new single “Guard My Heart.” With its raw, relatable lyrics and infectious melody, I know you’re going to love this one.

“I think my favourite thing about ‘Guard My Heart’ is how it has shape shifted over time to have several meanings to me personally,” said lead vocalist Zoe Catterall. “Originally written to guide me through my first ever break-up in 2016, over time it became an anthem for the heart-wrenching best friend break-up for me, and the more I listen to it, the more I realise it’s a biiiig hug for when you have to let someone go for better or for worse, to protect your own heart and maybe even theirs too.”

“To me, it’s about reckoning with how to get on with your life in spite of everything feeling irrevocably different post-break-up,” added lead guitarist Hilary Geddes. “We hope it offers comfort and catharsis – there’s space in this song to feel both utterly liberated AND fit in a little cry in the chorus at the same time.”

The Buoys have got stacks of cool gigs on the horizons, including headlining shows and choice festival slots, so make sure you get out and see them when they’re visiting your city.

The Buoys and Sløtface Release Online Collaboration, “Fight Back Time”

The pandemic showed us that distance needn’t be a barrier to creating great art. Most artists have gotten back to collaborating in person, but it’s refreshing to see some still making use of the technological tools at their disposal to create exciting new works. Thanks to Zoom, Aussie band The Buoys and Norway’s Sløtface have teamed up for their fabulous new single “Fight Back Time.” If you love acts like Wet Leg and Teen Jesus & The Jean Teasers, I know this will be right up your alley.

“Fight Back Time for me is about feeling way too caught up in everything you’re doing when you have too much going on, and desperately trying to grab some pieces of your life back so that you feel in control.” Explained Haley Shea of Sløtface, who wrote the bones of the song with collaborators and producers Michael Champion and Paul Whalley. She ended up shelving it, but found new inspiration after connecting digitally with The Buoys.

“Zoe [Catterall, The Buoys’ vocalist] and I met up on Zoom from our wildly different time zones and I instantly felt the connection. We had so much in common when it came to the theme of the song, and it felt extra fitting to be having that conversation early morning my time, and late evening Zoe’s time,” Haley recalled. “We bonded over the struggle of making time for everything as a working musician and songwriter.”

“Time is a concept I write about a lot! Balancing your day job with a hectic touring schedule is no piece of cake and it was really cool to talk at length about this with Haley at the end of my working day in Australia when her day was just starting in Norway,” Zoe added. “I feel like we’re all trying to fit in what we want to do around our responsibilities while also making time for family and friends. What’s left in the end is a dose of exhaustion and the feeling that sometimes time is getting away from you and that’s definitely what resonated with me the most.”

It may have started online, but Sløtface has been enjoying time in Australia meeting The Buoys in person and participating in songwriting sessions with local artists this month. It sounds like we’ll hear a lot more Aussie collaborations from Sløtface in future. Until then, follow them on the socials to see all their local adventures.

New Talent Showcased at The Collective

Some of the hottest emerging acts in the country are converging on Sydney next month. Dubbed The Collective, this event gives new artists a chance to showcase their talents and punters the opportunity to discover some Aussie music legends in the making.

You might not know Clews, Totty, The Buoys, Cry Club, or Spit Chewy just yet, but I’ll wager that one of these New South Wales acts will be your new favourite band.

The Collective hits The Lansdowne Hotel on December 8. Tickets are on sale now.

The Buoys Touring Ace New Single “Arm Wrestle”

I’ll warn you; once you listen to “Arm Wrestle,” the latest track from Sydney femme four-piece The Buoys you’ll be singing it all day. It’s irresistibly catchy, with grungy guitars and raw lyrics contrasting with those sweet vocals.

“‘Arm Wrestle’ came to be when I had to address the reality of a situation. I had to explore if my thoughts were rational, or if I was making things up in my head and self-sabotaging,” The Buoys’ frontwoman Zoe explained. “It details that inner voice argument of, ‘something really bad is going down’ vs ‘don’t be silly, it’s all in your head, you’re crazy’. It’s an exploration of what it’s like to gaslight yourself really, only to find out your gut was right and you weren’t paranoid after all.”

The Buoys might just be the best band to come out of a failed Tinder date. Zoe didn’t meet her match, but the date’s cousin Tess was the perfect drummer. They found guitarist Anthea through Gumtree, bassist Ros jumped on board, and the rest is history.

“Arm Wrestle” comes from The Buoys’ sophomore EP Split Lip, which will be released later this year. You’ll get a taste of the new material and all your old favourites from Soft Boy at the following shows.

24 October 2018 – The Cambridge Hotel, Newcastle
25 October 2018 – The Lansdowne, Sydney
28 October 2018 – Transit Bar, Canberra
10 November 2018 – Psyched As Festival, Sydney
11 November 2018 – Factory Floor, Sydney (with Rackett)
