The Jezabels Release “The End”

The time The Jezabels have spent in London seems to be time well spent, because the band are back with the single that I think is the best of their career. “The End” is the first track lifted from The Jezabels’ as yet untitled sophomore effort, and it shows a band with a newly discovered pop sensibility that hasn’t strayed too far from its roots.

Hayley Mary says the song is “about a time that I think we all reach at some point in our lives, where you are not sure you can go on, not sure that you have anything left to give. When you’re on your knees asking yourself, Is this the end? If you don’t ultimately want to say ‘yes’ to that question then you know you still have something to give, and you just have to get on with living.”

The Jezabels are now based in the United Kingdom, where they’ve just landed the plum role of support act for Depeche Mode’s arena shows in November. They haven’t forgotten us altogether though. The Jezabels will be back on homesoil to play St Jerome’s Laneway Festival next year.

360 Dominates ARIA Award Nominations

If the nominations are any indication, 360 could scoop this year’s ARIA Awards. The hip hop artist has scored six nominations: Best Male Artist, Breakthrough Artist, Album of the Year and Best Urban Album (Falling and Flying), Song of the Year (“Boys Like You”), and Best Australian Live Act.

Gotye and The Jezabels also did well with five nods. Just behind them we see Lanie Lane and Hilltop Hoods with four nominations each.

I’m most impressed by the diversity of this year’s awards. We see so many genres represented and a great mix of new artists and old favourites. In recent years it’s felt the awards have gone a bit too alternative, so I’m thrilled to see mainstream pop acts, dance divas, and rock acts getting their due. I’m not so secretly hoping to see Cold Chisel take out the best group category.

In something new this year, fans will also be able to vote via the ARIA website for four categories: Song of the Year, Best Australian Live Act, Best International Artist and Best Video.

The pointy statues will be handed out at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on November 29. They’ll air on GO! You can see all the nominees at the ARIA website.

The Jezabels Cover Art on Show

In this digital age, bands who care about their cover art are becoming increasingly rare. The Jezabels are one of those special acts who create albums that look as good as they sound. This is in large part due to the work of Australian artist Christopher Doyle. Some of his works, including his Jezabels covers, will grace the walls of Sydney’s Mart Gallery next month.

Christopher’s photography and design has helped defined The Jezabels’ aesthetic from their inception. This exhibition is a significant one for fans, as it’s the first time they can see the images in their original large formats, along with unreleased artwork and rare test shots. Limited edition prints will also be on sale, allowing devotees to take home a little piece of the band’s history.

“Chris is so important to us,” explained The Jezabels’ guitarist Sam Lockwood. “With our releases, he has repeatedly been able to understand the underlying message of our music, as well as our somewhat strange musical aesthetic. He has time and time again come up with beautiful, surreal, sublime and uncanny visual translations of the music we make. We talk about this between ourselves in the band – the way that Chris has helped us define what we do.”

Christopher Doyle’s work will be on show at the Mart Gallery in Surry Hills from December 8 to 14.

Gotye Stays on Top of Singles Charts

Gotye has now achieved a massive eight consecutive weeks on top of the Aussie singles charts with his monster song “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The track, which features Kimbra on guest vocals, is now an impressive four times platinum. It’s also the only Aussie song to sit inside the top ten, or even the top twenty. I’m not sure what’s helped Gotye cut through in this chart which is generally dominated by international acts, but I’m impressed.

His album Making Mirrors has fallen a few spots to sit at number four, but with impressive debuts from Blink 192 and Tony Bennett, not to mention the staying power of the seemingly invincible Adele, this is still a fair effort. All that new chart action has also seen The Jezabels slip from number two to nine with their debut Prisoner.

Gotye On Top Again

Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” is proving unstoppabable, taking out the number one possie on the ARIA charts for an incredible seventh consecutive week. It’d be getting boring if he wasn’t an Aussie with the support of the country behind him. His album Making Mirrors is also performing impressively, slipping down one to land at number three this week.

I’d bitch and moan about the slide if an Aussie band wasn’t behind it. The Jezabels have zoomed into the charts with a number two debut for their first album, Prisoner. Pete Murray is also hanging on to the top ten. His newie Blue Sky Blue has dropped from six to nine this week.

The Jezabels Ready “Prisoner” Release

It’s been a long time coming, but after spending whatever time they weren’t on the road this year in the studio, The Jezabels are almost ready to unleash their debut album, Prisoner.

The release sees the band teaming up again with producer Lachlan Mitchell, the wizard behind their first three EPs. You know what they say about not fixing what ain’t broke. The record features the first single “Endless Summer,” which we should hear on radio sometime in the next week or two.

The Jezabels have been doing amazing things in the past year, earning critical acclaim with shows in the United Kingdom, Europe, North America, and at home. The album release is sure to solidify their reputation as one of Australia’s most exciting new acts.

Prisoner will hit all good record stores on September 16. Stay tuned to Sounds of Oz for a national tour announcement soon!

Q & A with Two Hours Traffic’s Liam Corcoran

It doesn’t seem like too long ago that Two Hours Traffic was winging their way around the country with Dead Letter Chorus, yet already the Canadian band is planning a return journey. I caught up with the band’s lead singer/guitarist Liam Corcoran to chat about the upcoming tour with The Jezabels, the album Territory, and spending time in Oz.

You’re touring Australia soon to support The Jezabels. Are you looking forward to those shows?
We are very much looking forward to the Australian tour supporting the Jezabels. I absolutely love their sound and they are very sweet people. Not to mention that the shows are selling out everywhere.

The Jezabels played with you recently in Canada too, so are you psyched to be hitting the road with them again?
We got to play six or seven shows with the Jezabels in North America and we were honored to have them play with us. I think our Canadian fans were blown away by the group and I can’t wait to see them perform on their home turf.

Have they promised to show you any of the sights?
I know that Sam from the Jezabels grew up around Byron Bay and he has promised us some surfing lessons. It’s probably going to be pretty ugly on our end, because we will be first-timers, but what the hell? You can’t pass up an offer like that.

You’re really successful in Canada, so what’s it like to step out of the spotlight a bit and become the support act?
Being a support act in a new country is kind of like starting all over again.  You are back playing for people who have never heard of you, and if you don’t give them something special they won’t even remember the name of your band by the time the headliner comes on. It can be scary but it keeps things fresh. It’s easy to get complacent when we play a successful tour in Canada so getting out into new areas is vital.

The Jezabels New “Mace Spray” Video

The latest song to get my blood pumping is “Mace Spray,” the lead single from The Jezabels’ third EP Dark Storm.

The EP name is an appropriate one, not just for all the gloomy grey weather we’ve been experiencing but that delicious moodiness that hangs over this song. Hayley Mary’s vocals are gorgeous, and all the musicians play their part to create a lovely brooding atmosphere.

The Sydney band are currently strutting their stuff in Canada, but they’ll be back soon enough to play a string of shows around the country. It seems I’m not the only one who’s fallen for this indie four-piece as many of the capital city shows have already sold out. If that’s not an excuse for a road trip I don’t know what is!

See them with new Canadian pals Two Hours Traffic at the following shows.
