“Chords” – Tim Guy

Tim Guy’s fifth studio album has been a long time coming. I reviewed one of its singles, “St Petersburg” way back in June. However the album Chords drops today and it’s been worth the wait.

The first thing that struck me was how easy Chords is to listen to. On my first listen I didn’t even take any notes because I was too busy enjoying it. The Soundcloud link I received tagged it as pop, country rock, and folk rock, which gives you an idea of the album’s diversity. But there’s a lovely warm organic quality to all the songs that helps unify them.

It was so great to hear “St Petersburg” again. I enjoy it as much as I did when I wrote about it all those months ago. The alt-country feel and story behind the lyrics of “The Rambler” really sucked me in. “Electric Heart” is another highlight, with its slide guitar and clap-along rhythm. The retro feel of “Mixed Up Mind” and funky disco-esque groove of “It’s the Weekend!” add more colour to an already eclectic album.

As I mentioned, this is Tim’s fifth studio effort, and that experience anchors this recording. He approaches every song with confidence, no matter what genre he’s flirting with. This is an accomplished effort from one of Australia’s real unsung talents.

Chords is available now from Tim Guy’s Bandcamp page. He’ll play the following launch shows to support its release.

11 November 2015 – The Toff in Town, Melbourne
25 November 2015 – Crown & Sceptre, Adelaide
5 December 2015 – Bearded Tit, Sydney

Tim Guy Delivers Your Monday Soundtrack

After a busy time where I’ve worked far too many weekends, I’ve had a fairly cruisy day today. I’ve also been lucky enough to find just the right soundtrack for it, “St Petersburg” by Tim Guy. It’s got a lovely indie-pop vibe to it and one of the coolest videos I’ve seen for some time.

“St Petersburg” is the first track lifted from Tim’s fifth studio album, which will hit stores later this year.

New Tim Guy Album About to Drop

I was so impressed last year when I heard “Armour Weight”, the first single from Tim Guy’s fourth album Dreaming of a Night Mango. It was laid back, free of pretention, and just beautiful. We get more of the same with Tim’s latest single “Many People I Know” You know what they say about not fixing what ain’t broke!

The song is a gentle number which Tim penned way back in 2011. He’d just moved back to Melbourne after living in Auckland, and he felt somewhat displaced in this town he once called home. It’s a slow burner, but a stunner nonetheless.

If you love these songs you’ll want to grab the album and see the shows. Dreaming of a Night Mango hits stores on April 5, which is not so coincidentally around the same time he’s setting off for a national tour. Here are all the places you can see him play!

Tim Guy Comes Home for New Album

He might be a Melbourne boy, but after spending time living in New Zealand and touring the United Kingdom and Europe, Tim Guy can be regarded as a true citizen of the world.

Tim’s penned albums in New Zealand and Spain, but when it came time to create album number four Tim knew he had to return home. The result is Dreaming of a Night Mango, an album which is more organic than previous releases.

The album doesn’t drop until early next year, but we get an early taste of it with “Armour Weight,” the album’s first official single. The track’s really understated, which allows its rolling rhythms and heartfelt vocals to shine through.

Tim will launch the single and preview tracks from Dreaming of a Night Mango with a special show at Fitzroy’s Workers Club on November 7.
