Tim Wheatley Home to Release “78 Benz”

Cast of Yesterday was one of my favourite albums of 2015. I’d forgotten just how much I love it until I revisited one of the tracks today, the current single “78 Benz.” If you still haven’t listened to this album from Aussie expat Tim Wheatley, this song should give you every indication of why you should.

Tim wrote the track about his own vintage Mercedes and about the way you’ve got to follow your passions in life, no matter how difficult that might be.

“I had been in LA nearly a year, playing shows, writing, and turning my hand to other things like modelling and acting,” he explained in the press release. “I was juggling three passions, in which rejection is an integral part, and really struggling with it … ironically, as much as it was taking its toll on me, ‘78 Benz,’ my favourite song on the record, would never have come about with the absence of struggle.”

Tim will play one more local show, at Collingwood’s Grace Darling Hotel on June 10, before heading back to the U.S. If you get the chance, you don’t want to miss it.

Tim Wheatley Back Home for Single Tour

It hasn’t been too long since Los Angeles-based Aussie Tim Wheatley was on home soil, but he’s back again for a New South Wales tour to support his bluesy new single “The Heathen,” the latest release from one of my favourite albums of the year, Cast of Yesterday.

The track draws on Tim’s early days in LA and the seedy characters he met during this time. The video has garnered some massive attention, scoring more than 26,000 views via Facebook in just a week.

If you’re in New South Wales, here are all the places you can catch Tim in the coming weeks.

28 November 2015 – Laycock Street Theatre, Gosford
2 December 2015 – Panthers, Penrith
3 December 2015 – Lizotte’s, Newcastle
4 December 2015 – Dee Why RSL, Dee Why
5 December 2015 – The Basement, Sydney

“Cast of Yesterday” – Tim Wheatley

After waxing lyrical about his single “Valerie” last week, I could wait to dive into Tim Wheatley’s solo album Cast of Yesterday. I was not disappointed.

Just like “Valerie,” the album hooked me instantly with its opening track “The Heathen,” a sultry blues-country number with wailing harmonicas and a driving guitar beat. The second song “78 Benz” shifted gears, but grabbed me with its lyrics about freedom and trying to figure out your place in the world.

These two songs are just some of the highlights in this stellar body of work. I’d be remiss not to mention the modern country feel of the banjo-driven “Burning the Midnight Oil.” I marvelled at the way “Dumb Luck” could floor me in just over a minute, but its quiet stillness did just that. The soulful “The Messenger” is another standout.

But the thing is, there are no filler songs here. Everything is amazing, and I have a feeling my favourites are going to change depending on my mood. Each and every song stands up on its own, but together they create a picture of an artist who’s poised on the edge of greatness. I love the way Tim uses harmonicas and slide guitars and other underutilised instruments to add atmosphere. The way he blends country, folk, and blues is inspired. And there’s Tim’s sexy, husky voice and his incredible way with words. This is an artist who knows himself, who’s come out the other side of alter egos (Crooked Saint) and bands (Rushcutter, The Sparrows) and figured out the kind of music he needs to make. And it’s wonderful.

Cast of Yesterday is available for pre-order ahead of its August 28 release.

Unwind with Tim Wheatley’s “Valerie”

After a busy working week, we all need to shift gears and start winding down. Tim Wheatley can help you get into the right frame of mind with his cruisy new single “Valerie.” This is a world away from the upbeat track Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson made famous a few years back. It’s perfectly chilled folky acoustic goodness, with a dreamy slide guitar and the sort of husky vocals that make me melt. Or perhaps that’s just the sight of Tim himself?

Anyway, if you love his music or you’re just a bit smitten too, make sure to check out Tim’s album Cast of Yesterday when it hits stores on August 28. He’s currently supporting the release with dates all around the East Coast, so get along to one of the following shows for your folk fix.
