Q & A With Jim Siourthas from Tin Alley

Melbourne rockers Tin Alley are keeping busy on their first national tour. But vocalist and guitarist Jim Siourthas found time en route to Brisbane to tell me about crazy Australian towns, MySpace, and his band’s debut album Every Turn.

You’re just wrapping up your first national tour. How have the crowds been responding to your music?
We’ve had great shows in most cities/towns we’ve visited – some busier than others but all in all they’ve been great shows.

What can people expect from Tin Alley live?
Great musicianship, energy and great songs that will surely leave you wanting more.

Any crazy tour stories to tell?
Where do I begin … my favourite is some town names we have driven past: Bobbin Head, Bald Nob and Woodenbong. They are real towns – look them up! They definitely keep the drive interesting!

I heard you worked with American director/producer Max Ribitzky on the clips for “In Your Hands” and “Polar Bear.” Is it hard to develop these things together when you’re half a world away?
It was a unique experience because we used various internet technologies to facilitate our collaboration. We used Messenger, YouTube, Skype and e-mail to communicate and work together to complete the film clip.

You’re one of the many bands who has a MySpace page rather than a traditional website. How important is MySpace for getting exposure?
Myspace is a great tool for any band because it provides a way to reach fans with music, video, pictures, news – all the necessities of a good website. It is good for exposure to new listeners but MySpace alone cannot win fans – it is a great starting help though.

Tin Alley Tour Oz

Melbourne trio Tin Alley are back with their brand new single “Polar Bear.” To celebrate the release the lads have hit the road for their very first Australian tour.

The gigs have extra significance for the band, who were forced to cancel a previous tour when drummer Peter was involved in a motorcycle accident. He’s all better now, and the boys are thrilled to be able to bring their music to the people.

They’re visiting plenty of capital cities and regional centers, so there’s bound to be a show near you. In the meantime, make sure you take a look at the filmclip for their funky new single Polar Bear!

Tin Alley are playing the following dates around the country.

12 June 2008 – The National Hotel, Geelong
13 June 2008 – The Yahoo Bar, Shepparton
14 June 2008 – The Pub, Bendigo

Win "Every Turn" by Tin Alley

Tin Alley are a rare band on the modern music landscape. Their debut album Every Turn lacks the studio polish of many, but that’s not a bad thing. In fact, it gives this Melbourne outfit a gritty honesty that sets them apart from their contemporaries.

Listening to Every Turn took me back to the early 90s rock scene, when local bands like You Am I and The Cruel Sea ruled the airwaves. Like them, Tin Alley are a tight outfit delivering melodic rock that pulls no punches. The title track, “Act Without Thought,” sets the scene, an infectious fusion of rock and pop.

But don’t think Tin Alley are just another middle of the road rock-pop act. They show so much more diversity, with the blues inspired “In a Knot” and psychedelic “Polar Bear” among the album’s highlights.

I have one copy of Every Turn to give away to one lucky Oz Music Scene reader. Just leave a comment saying why you’d love the CD before noon January 29 (AEST). I’ll announce the winner next Wednesday!
