Hillsong Worship Tops ARIA Charts

The unstoppable Hillsong Worship has scored its latest number one album with Open Heaven/River Wild, an album recorded during the Hillsong Conference in Sydney this July.

Triple J’s Like a Version Volume 11 showed that it’s got really staying power after holding steady at number two this week, despite strong competition from new albums from Demi Lovato, Jamie Lawson, and Pentatonix.

These strong debuts have pushed last week’s number one, Limit of Love by Boy & Bear, down to number seven, just ahead of Cold Chisel’s The Perfect Crime.

There are no Aussies on the singles charts, but hopefully as X Factor mania heats up that will change.

Here are all this week’s top tens.

Boy & Bear Claim Aussie Number One Album

Boy & Bear’s Limit of Love has become the tenth Aussie album to top the charts this year. The achievement is the latest in a dream run for the Sydney indie-folk band, who also hit number one with their last album Harlequin Dream and number two with their debut, Moonfire.

Boy & Bear’s success has pushed Triple J’s Like a Version Volume 11 down to number two this week. Last week’s second-place getters Cold Chisel have to be content with a fall to number four, as Selena Gomez has charted at number three with her latest effort Revival. Parkway Drive have also slipped a few spots this week to land at number seven with Ire.

Hats off to Cyrus Villanueva, who sits at number six on the singles charts with his cover of “Wicked Game.” This strong showing, well above any of the other X Factor efforts makes me think my husband might be right in believing Cyrus has this competition in the bag. Personally I’m pinning my hopes on Matt & Jess, so we’ll see.

Here’s what’s charting in the top 10s this week.

Like a Version Beats Out Cold Chisel for Number One Album

I was sure that Cold Chisel would take out the top spot on the ARIA charts this week, but another Aussie release has swooped in and overshadowed these local legends. Chisel had to be content with The Perfect Crime charting at number two after Triple J Like a Version Vol. 11 claimed the top spot. Last week’s number one, Ire by Parkway Drive, fell to number three. How good is it to see three local releases at the top of the albums charts?

Jessica Mauboy is the lone Aussie on the top 10 singles charts. Her latest track “This Ain’t Love” climbed three spots to sit at number five this week.

Here are this week’s top 10s.

Will Taylor Swift Crack Hottest 100? And Why All the Fuss?

I’ve read with interest all the hoo-ha surrounding the campaign to have Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” included in the Triple J Hottest 100. At the time of writing it’s unclear whether the song will be deemed ineligible due to KFC inadvertently breaking official voting rules, whether Taylor will take her place in the countdown, or whether those ardent supporters simply won’t have the numbers to see her cracking the list.

Either way, I’ve been a bit bemused by the staunch Triple J supporters who insisted that Taylor has no place in “their” countdown. I admire that sense of loyalty to an ideal of what Triple J is, but I can’t help feeling that it’s a bit misplaced here. I pay very little attention to what’s commercial and what’s not. I’ll love something because it’s good, not because it’s mainstream or underground or even Australian. And I must admit, one of the songs I loved this year was “Shake it Off.” So much so that for the first time in my life, I found myself forking over money at my local JB for a copy of 1989. “Shake it Off” deserves a place amongst the top 100 songs of the year, and to suggest otherwise seems a bit elitist to me, like pop music is somehow less valid than other genres.

Pop music might not be Triple J’s go-to genre, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t belong in their countdown if the voters want it there badly enough. Personally I struggle to see too much of a difference between “Shake it Off” and “Uptown Funk,” which everyone is sure will come close to the top 10. Is it Mark Ronson’s name attached that makes this number one smash a bit cooler? In previous years we’ve had big commercial singles like “Pretty Fly for a White Guy,” “Thrift Shop” and “Amazing” take top honours, yet no one batted an eyelid. Some argue that the song shouldn’t make the countdown because it wasn’t played on Triple J, but neither were Alanis Morissette, Green Day, Foo Fighters, and U2 songs that made the cut in the past.

So why the outrage? Does it all come down to the fact that this is a pretty young blonde singing a song without a hint of edge? Can that really be so threatening? It reeks of musical snobbery to me. Personally I hope “Shake it Off” does make the countdown. It’s one of the most well-crafted songs of the year, regardless of its genre or artist, and that’s what counts.

See Ya 2014!

So here it is, my last post for 2014. Time for me to grab a glass of champers and get the party started away from my computer. But I felt it was fitting to leave you with a little something. So in case you missed it when it was on Triple J recently, here is the final Like a Version for the year, Bluejuice and a host of special guests (including Ngaiire, Elana Stone, the guys from The Griswolds, and Andy Bull) covering “End of the Road.” It’s amazing. Farewell 2014 and bring on 2015!

X Factor’s Dami Im Tops ARIA Singles Charts

When I watched Katy Perry perform her smash hit single “Roar” on the X Factor finale, I remember thinking that Dami Im sang the song better a couple of weeks prior. So perhaps it’s fitting that Dami’s roared louder on the ARIA Charts this week and beaten Miss Perry to the top spot. The reigning X Factor queen has scored her first Australian number one with “Alive.”

Guy Sebastian’s appearance on the finale appears to have done him some good too. His latest single “Like a Drum,” the first to come from his forthcoming seventh album, is sitting at number four on debut. The song is Guy’s 12th top ten single.

Last year’s X Factor contestant Nathaniel continues to do great business with “You.” It only slipped slightly this week to claim the seventh spot on the charts. It pipped Justice Crew’s newie “Everybody,” which jumped ten spots to sit at number eight.

Last week’s number one album, Triple J’s Like a Version Volume 9, has fallen to number four this week. It beat out Kerser’s S.C.O.T. and Tina Arena’s Reset, which sit at number five and six respectively.

Triple J Like a Version 9 Nabs Number One

Local compilation album Triple J Like a Version 9 has beaten out strong competition from James Blunt and Lorde to claim the spot at the top of the ARIA albums chart this week. This is the best result for a Like a Version compilation, beating out volume 6 which made it to number two in November 2010. The latest edition features local acts San Cisco, Tame Impala, Vance Joy, Chance Waters, and the fabulous Bonjah.

Tina Arena’s recent appearance on X Factor seems to have done her some good. Her new album Reset debuted at number four. Last week we saw Jessica Mauboy sitting there, but this week her latest album Beautiful has dropped down to number eight.

On the singles chart it’s another X Factor success story. Taylor Henderson’s sitting at number two with his awesome cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” What a shame this show doesn’t work like The Voice and offer voting credits in exchange for downloads! Last year’s finalist Nathaniel is also making his presence felt. His new single “You” slipped to number six this week, down two spots from last week.

Triple J Hottest 100 Double Album Released Next Month

You tuned in on Australia Day, and soon you can own the best songs from the countdown with the release of Triple J Hottest 100 Volume 18.

Angus & Julia Stone’s winning single “Big Jet Plane” sits comfortably alongside other local hits from Little Red, Sia, Washington, Bliss N Eso, and heaps more. In fact, reflecting the make-up of this year’s countdown roughly half of the album is local music. With all of the hits on here, it’s no wonder they needed to make the collection a double CD!

Angus & Julia Stone Tops Triple J Hottest 100

Australia celebrated local music yesterday, putting Angus & Julia Stone at the top of the annual Triple J Hottest 100 chart with “Big Jet Plane.” The folky duo edged out fellow countrymen Little Red with “Rock It.”

It was a very patriotic looking chart this year, with Birds of Tokyo, Boy & Bear, and Art Vs. Science also finding a place in the top ten. In all there were 51 Aussie songs in the top 100, a phenomenal effort that’s only testimony to the bumper year in local music that was 2010. And how wonderful to hear all those homegrown tunes on Australia Day!

Ausmusic Month is Coming!

November is Ausmusic Month on Triple J and the ABC’s jtv live! The radio station and their sister television program are serving up some great talent to celebrate.

Starting on Thursday November 1, the ABC will screen six massive local concerts. The fun will kick off with John Butler Trio’s performance in Melbourne’s Federation Square.

In the following weeks you can catch shows by Missy Higgins, Powderfinger, Grinspoon, and The Cat Empire.

The concerts will screen on ABC at 11.25 pm every Thursday in November. If you have digital television you can watch it at the more civilised time of 9.30 pm on Tuesdays.

Triple J has always been a big supporter of local music, but you can expect to hear even more of it in November.

The station will kick off the month with a massive party on the roof of their Sydney studio. Triple J listeners could win passes to enjoy a free Aussie BBQ and live performances by Clare Bowditch, Tim Rogers, and Gotye. Of course, if you don’t win you can always listen to the show on the radio.
