Troy Cassar-Daley Previews New Album With “Let’s Ride” Single

You always know you’re in such good hands when Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung artist Troy Cassar-Daley drops new music. In May he’ll release his 12th studio album Between The Fires, but he’s giving us an early taste with the release of a new single “Let’s Ride.” Featuring guest vocals from Kasey Chambers, it celebrates Troy’s love of cars and the freedom the open road provides. Like the other songs from Between The Fires, Troy wrote this song after the loss of his parents, when he found himself as a personal and professional crossroads.

“The new album was recorded at my late mum’s old place at Halfway Creek and is incredibly special on many levels. It’s the place I moved to when my Nan Daley died in 1979 and where I lived for many years,” Troy explained. “The reason I wanted to record there was that after losing Mum and going back with a very heavy heart, I started to write songs. I started to feel that this was the centre of my musical universe again, just like it was growing up. I came to realise that I still have music in me. All I had to do was return to the well and that record collection in our old house on beautiful Gumbaynggirr country which soothed me during my sorry business. I want this album to reflect that there isn’t a more powerful place in the world than a childhood home. To know Mum was there in spirit to help guide this record was a true gift.”

Between The Fires is slated for release on May 10. Troy’s got a couple of festival appearances coming up before its release, when he’ll embark on a national tour.

Briggs and Troy Cassar-Daley Team Up For Shadows

Briggs’ collaboration with Troy Cassar-Daley, the single “Shadows,” seems unlikely at first. The worlds of hip hop and country rarely mix. But these are two of the country’s proudest Indigenous artists, so when you think about it, it makes complete sense.

The track is a fabulous reworking of Troy’s original song “Shadows on the Hill.” Briggs’ rap and fresh production from Jaytee Hazard breathe new life into the song, ensuring this story of an important part of our country’s history reaches new ears.

“’Shadows On The Hill’ started its song line around a fire on Gumbaynggirr country at our men’s camp,” Troy explained. “There was one powerful moment for all of us when a massacre was mentioned that happened up the river from where we camped with our families for many generations, the wind died down, the air around us was still and not one bird sang. My old uncle stood up and said, ‘Don’t be scared the old people know we are here; they are just letting us know’. The trees on the mountains across the river from us stood long and lonely. I believe the old people gave me this song to acknowledge the pain and to share one of the many brutal stories of this land and more importantly to share the truth. Because song lines never end and make their way through thousands of generations, I shared the song with Briggs so the next generation can hear the story of the ‘Shadows On The Hill’”

Briggs said “’Shadows’ was brought to me by Troy; I was honoured he’d share this part of his story with me. There was so much depth and this haunting truth that is woven through his words. As a kid I’d often remember rumours about what parts of Melbourne were old ‘graveyards,’ Which I guess is a way to explain a massacre site or to reconcile it for young ears. Where the bodies dropped they built a fuckin’ parking lot.”

When you listen to this track, make sure you really listen. Hear the words, hear the story, and properly take it all in. It’s important.

Troy Cassar-Daley, James Morrison, and More Play Yarrabah Band Festival

It started as a fundraising event to keep the Yarrabah Brass Band alive, but the Yarrabah Band Festival has become one of the most anticipated events of the Queensland town’s social calendar. Part of the Queensland Music Festival, this year’s event features some of our most revered entertainers, Troy Cassar-Daley, James Morrison, Sara Storer, and KLP, as well as musicians from the local area.

This year the event, which attracted 4,000 music lovers last year, has moved to the Jilara Football Oval to accommodate the growing crowd.

“Yarrabah Band Festival is an incredibly special event on the QMF calendar, celebrating local and national talent, connecting communities and inspiring the next generation of Yarrabah musicians,” said one of the event’s most high profile supporters, Katie Noonan. “We cherish our relationship with this highly creative community and the opportunity to engage with and learn from them.”

Local art and food stalls, as well as all the great musical acts, will help make the day one to remember.

The Yarrabah Band Festival hits Jilara Football Oval on October 28 from midday. Entry is free, but gold coin donations to benefit the Yarrabah Seahawks Rugby League Club are welcome. Bring a blanket, cushion, or chair and join in the fun!

Aussie Stars Cover “You’re The Voice” For Domestic Violence Charities

Domestic and family violence are some of the most pressing issues facing our society today. A host of talented local musicians are doing the bit to raise awareness with the release of a cover of John Farnham’s smash “You’re The Voice.”

The track features some of the biggest names in music today: Katie Noonan, Kate Ceberano, Isaiah, Troy Cassar-Daley, Montaigne, and Archie Roach.

“I’m so proud of the positive response from the Australian community and music industry in rallying together to support this initiative. It is a testament to the power of music being able to make a difference,” Katie said. She’s the artistic director of this year’s Queensland Music Festival. As part of the program, a 2000-strong choir will come together to sing “You’re The Voice” at South Bank Piazza. It happens at 5 pm on July 29, so check it out if you’re in the area.

All money raised from iTunes sales of the “You’re The Voice” single benefits the Sony Foundation and DV Connect, a Queensland-based 24/7 crisis response group. One thing I personally like about DVConnect is that it doesn’t discriminate. It understands that people of both genders can be victims of domestic violence, so it has a womensline (1800 811 811) and a mensline (1800 600 636). After watching The Red Pill this week, that sort of real gender equality matters to me. If you want to support it to, you know where to find the single!

Boy and Bear Top ARIA Charts with Harlequin Dream

Boy and Bear’s Harlequin Dream has become the tenth local title to hit the top of the ARIA Charts this year. The Sydney folksters have gone one better with their sophomore album; Moonfire hit second spot two years ago.

Last week’s number one, Atlas, dropped down to number four this week, with Rufus unable to compete with international giants P!nk and Fleetwood Mac. Dead Letter Circus, last week’s number two act, have also fallen this week. Their newie The Catalyst Fire sits at number nine.

Adam Harvey and Troy Cassar-Daley have no doubt enjoyed a boost from Father’s Day sales. Their Great Country Songbook has risen to number six this week, and impressive 10 weeks after its release.

Sadly there are no local singles in the ARIA top 10 after Vance Joy’s Riptide fell to number 12.

Harrison Craig Back on Top of Albums Charts

Harrison Craig proves he’s a force to be reckoned with this week with his album More Than a Dream returning to the top of the ARIA albums charts.

It’s a massive feat for the reigning Voice champion, who kept Jay-Z from the top spot and bumped our own Bliss N Eso’s Circus in the Sky down to number three.

Hillsong Live have also fallen with Glorious Ruins slipping from number three to six.

Josh Pyke made plenty of noise on Facebook this week about stores failing to stock his newie The Beginning and the End of Everything, so it’s impressive to see it still managed to snag the number seven spot on debut.

Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey are also continuing to make an impact on the charts with The Great Country Songbook. It sits at number nine this week.

We’re back to the usual suspects in the singles charts, with stayers Timomatic and Matt Corby sitting at number seven and ten respectively.

Harrison Craig Topples Kanye on ARIA Albums Charts

We came within a whisker of seeing another Aussie act on top of the album charts, but at the final hurdle Kanye West pipped Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey. This week is a different matter though, with Harrison Craig pushing the American hip hop star from the number one position.

It’d almost be a story of David and Goliath proportions if the sales figures weren’t compared to last year’s Voice victor. Harrison’s More Than a Dream might be on the top of the charts with 13, 167 copies sold. But that’s a far cry from the 35, 621 units Karise Eden’s album sold in its first week. And before you rush and say Harrison’s album was only released midweek, Karise was in the same position. Harrison’s got a lot to prove if he expects to make a lasting impression on the Aussie musical landscape.

Harrison did outsell the likes of Kanye, Daft Punk, and P!nk though, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. It also kept last week’s “almost number one” duo Troy Cassar-Daley and Adam Harvey at number three with their Great Country Songbook. Bernard Fanning’s Departures has slipped a bit, but it’s still selling well at number eight. It’s a similar story for Empire of the Sun, whose sophomore effort Ice on the Dune is sitting at number nine.

Meanwhile we’ve got two Aussies sitting pretty in the singles charts. Timomatic’s “Parachute” has held steady at number three. Matt Corby’s also clinging on to a top ten berth with “Resolution”.

Felicity Urquhart and Troy Cassar-Daley to Host Country Music Awards

Felicity Urquhart and Troy Cassar-Daley will share hosting duties at the 37th CMAA Country Music Awards.

Troy, a 14 times CMAA winner, said it was “a great honour” to host the show.

“I’m really looking forward to being on stage as a co-host with Felicity, especially as it’s an opportunity to say more than a few lines as I usually do as a presenter,” he said in a statement.

“Tamworth and I have a lot of history and I look forward to continuing to be a part of that history moving forward into 2009 at the 37th ‘Golden Guitar’ Awards.”

Felicity is similarly chuffed.

“It will be great to join Troy in hosting the 2009 CMAA Country Music Awards. The Awards represent the highest achievements in the Australian country music industry and to join my peers on our ‘night of nights’ is an honour.”

Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, John Williamson, Adam Brand, The McClymonts, The Slim Dusty Family, Catherine Britt, and Melinda Schneider will all perform on the night. The 37th CMAA Country Music Awards will hit Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Convention Centre on January 24.

Troy Casser-Daley Wins Major Country Award

Local lad Troy Cassar-Daley has won the Country Music Association Global Artist Award. Troy received the gong at The Stage in Nashville last night.

The award recognises the achievements of country artists which further the genre’s popularity outside the US.

“Receiving this award means a lot to me,” he said. “I have loved country music since I was a child and have enjoyed many years out on the road in Australia playing it.

“It makes me proud that people in Nashville think that I am a worthy ambassador for this award, and I look forward to many more shows playing this incredible music called country!”

With sales of around 250,000 units locally, Troy is definitely a worthy recipient. He also comes across as a genuinely nice guy. Congrats Troy!
