Sheppard Make Play for U.S. Market

After winning over Australian audiences, Sheppard are determined to make music lovers in the United States fall for them as well. The band from Brissie are capitalising on the buzz their appearance on Ellen created last year and launching a full-scale attack on the U.S. market.

They’ve booked a slate of big name TV appearances, including a spot on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on February 9, The Today Show on March 10, and LIVE! with Kelly & Michael on March 13. There’s a big gap there, but that’s because come February 11, Sheppard will be supporting Meghan Trainor on her sold-out The Bass tour.

Do you think Sheppard have what it takes to be the next bit Aussie success story?

Bec Laughton Says Goodbye to Australia

With killer tunes like “Heartbreak (Number One)” in her repertoire and Grammy Award winner Michael League (Snarky Puppy) in her corner, it was probably just a matter of time before we lost Brisbane girl Bec Laughton to the bright lights of the United States. Bec has offers on the table from producers in New York and Los Angeles, so she’s packing up her stuff and relocating to pursue R & B on the big stage.

Before she does though, Bec will say au revoir with a national tour all around the country. There’s no telling when she’ll be back, so make sure you don’t miss these farewell gigs.

Paul Kelly Takes A to Z Abroad

After wowing Australian audiences with his A to Z shows, Paul Kelly’s preparing to do it all over again in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada.

Paul will play tunes from A to Z to support the international releases of The A to Z Recordings and his book How to Make Gravy. One hundred of his most beloved works will be performed acoustically in alphabetical order across four nights in the UK. It seems Americans will need to do a bit of travelling if they want the complete A to Z experience as he’s only stopping in each city for two nights. Fans can buy individual tickets or multi-night bundles.

Paul Kelly is one of Australia’s best kept secrets, and most acclaimed singer-songwriters. I really hope plenty of international readers get out to these shows to discover for themselves just how brilliant he is.

The Black Ryder Impresses in America

We haven’t heard much from The Black Ryder since they supported The Cult last May, but this Aussie duo certainly hasn’t been idle. They relocated to Los Angeles to support Buy The Ticket, Take The Ride, which got an American release last September.

They continued their association with The Cult, travelling around the country for 32 shows with the iconic British band. When that wrapped up they set about writing and recording the tracks that would form album number two.
They also continued to play and earn fans, including High Road Touring’s Frank Riley (Patti Smith, Portishead, My Bloody Valentine). He’s now their official US booking agent, which is no doubt helping them open a few more doors.

Frank’s clearly doing his job as The Black Ryder packed out a headline show in January, sold out a performance at San Francisco’s NoisePop festival in February, and performed on the opening night of Concept, part of Los Angeles Fashion Week. And it’s only April!

There are more shows to come this month when The Black Ryder supports Spectrum, fronted by English psychedelic legend Pete Kember. Something tells me we’re not getting The Black Ryder back any time soon, so if you’re stateside make sure you do yourself a favour!

Aussie Girl Group Trinity Record Album in United States

You might not have heard of Australian girl group Trinity yet, but something tells me that’s going to change pretty quickly.

Yianna, Sammy, and Stephanie are heading to Los Angeles to record their debut album, which will be released through PLW Entertainment later in the year. The disc will include the song “Ever ‘n Ever,” a song featuring the legendary crooner Engelbert Humperdinck. It’s an interesting pairing for the Aussie girls, but one that might just see them getting some global cred.

The girls will also hone their dancing skills while stateside through workshops with Mo’at, who’s choreographed for the likes of Usher and Britney Spears.

Could Trinity be the next Pussycat Dolls? I guess we’ll see soon enough!

The Veronicas Go Platinum

The Veronicas have become the first Australian act in the 21st century to become platinum-selling artists in the United States.

“Untouched” sold 67, 000 digital units in the last week in the US, bringing its total sales to 1.01 million.

No other Australian act has even cracked the top 20 in the US since Kylie released “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” in 2003. This new milestone is definitely worth celebrating. Well done girls!
