Michael Coppel Withdrawal Puts V Festival in Doubt

V Festival’s future in Australia is in doubt after promoter Michael Coppel refused to renew his deal with Sir Richard Branson. Unless the Virgin Group can find another major promoter before March, it looks like the show won’t go ahead.

“For the past three years, the Virgin Group and Michael Coppel Presents have worked together to deliver the acclaimed V Festival to Australian audiences,” Mr Coppel said in a statement.

“The presentation of V Festival in 2009 concluded this arrangement and the partnership is not being renewed. The Virgin Group will make further announcements regarding V Festival in Australia in the coming months.”

But whispers are that Michael Coppel’s not getting out of the festival biz altogether. Industry buzz says he’s working on a festival for late 2010, with many suggesting it could see Livid resurrected. I’ll miss V Festival, but that would certainly ease the pain!

Madness and The Human League Join V-Festival

The V-Festival just got a whole lot more interesting for old fogies like myself. Ska legends Madness and 80s electro-pop outfit The Human League have just joined the bill!

But it’s not all retro. Youngsters will be satisfied with the recent addition of Razorlight, The Kills, and ex-Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis.

There are more local acts too, with Children Collide, Howling Bells, Jackson Jackson, and Wolf and Cub all late additions to the bill.

They join the already spectacular line-up which includes international headliners The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Duffy, and Snow Patrol.

Here are the dates!

28 March 2009 – Centennial Park, Sydney
29 March 2009 – Avica Resort, Gold Coast
4 April 2009 – Showgrounds, Melbourne
5 April 2009 – Claremont Showgrounds, Perth

Massive V Festival Line-up Announced

The Killers, Snow Patrol, Duffy, and the Kaiser Chiefs are amongst the big names confirmed to play the V Festival shows in Australia next year.

They’ll join Elbow, Louise XIV, The Do, Tame Impala, The Temper Trap and Crayons.

Tickets for the shows go on sale on November 28 through Ticketmaster. Plenty of tickets will be sold, but don’t stress about the environmental impact. Ticketmaster promise to carbon offset the ticket process. In addition, Virgin will donate $1 from the sale of every ticket to their charitable organisation Virgin Unite. So you can enjoy some great bands, and feel like you’re doing a good thing too!

Mika Cancels V Fest Appearance

Sorry Mika fans. It looks like the flamboyant pop star won’t play our V Festival after all. Mika blames scheduling conflicts for his decision to back out of the festival.

“In an effort to create the best album possible for fans, Mika will need additional time to record in London,” according to a V Festival press release.

“He extends many apologies to anyone who has purchased tickets for the inconvenience and disappointment this cancellation may cause.”

The festival still has a killer lineup, with the Smashing Pumpkins, Duran Duran, and Queens of the Stone Age set to appear. But it’s cold comfort for Aussie Mika lovers.

Smashing Pumpkins, Duran Duran and More Play V Festival

A real mixed bag of bands are heading our way for the second annual V Festival next year.

Whiny ’90s rockers The Smashing Pumpkins will headline the event, alongside 80s supergroup Duran Duran, and the cooler-than-cool popster Mika. The eclectic bill also includes Jesus and the Mary Chain, Air, Queens of the Stoneage, and The Presets.

The V Festival hits Sydney’s Centennial Park on March 29, the Gold Coast on March 30, Melbourne Showgrounds on April 5, and finishes up in Perth on April 6. Tickets are on sale this Thursday from the V Festival website.
